Insects In Camera

Info

Insects In Camera explores insect perception through experimental photography and filmmaking. The outcome is an immersive video made using an old digital camera which was physically modified to take macro photographs.
Process

The outcome is the result of months of iterative experimentation. With the front element of the lens removed from the Canon IXUS 105, the camera loses its ability to focus to infinity, producing an extremely shallow depth of field and visible distortions such as blur falloff and chromatic aberration. The short focal range required close proximity to the subject, making the act of photographing more involved and less observational.

Venus, The Bringer of Peace

Info

This experimental animation was made in response to Gustav Holst’s Venus, The Bringer of Peace. The brief was approached with the methodology of tool + process (laser + cyanotype). The final animation is made from over 170 cyanotype prints produced by shining a UV laser through various lenses.
Process

At the start of the project, the piece was transcribed in a way that helped identify changes in timbre, texture and dynamics. Once these were isolated, the duration of each section was used to determine the number of frames needed.

Positioning a UV laser very close to the paper reduced the exposure time to two minutes. A telescope stand was udes as a jig to move the laser incrementally while the paper remained fixed, creating a smooth animation.

Dissertation Publication   Info

A publication of an original dissertation:
“What makes my ratchet screwdriver evocative? Exploring object–subject relationships and narrative through the lens of phenomenology.”
Process

The publication focuses on materiality and reader experience through its physical construction. Open binding and exposed hardware celebrate the making process, while the editorial design incorporates visible printer’s marks and maker’s marks. The object is deliberately heavy and tactile, reinforcing associations between weight, durability, and value. The two chapters are joined with hinges, allowing them to be read side by side and encouraging interaction.
The Great Omi

Info

The Great Omi is the outcome of a collaborative project with the Bishopsgate Institute. A mechanical zoetrope installation invites users to view short looping animations made from archival footage, exploring the life of the Victorian circus performer through interaction.
Makerversity Residency

Info

Throughout a six-month residency at Makerversity, new ways of producing cyanotype prints and animations were explored using lasers and various jigs.

Process

The work focused on material experimentation within the cyanotype process, testing how different materials responded to variations in exposure, light intensity, and movement. This led to the development of modular jigs that enabled controlled, repeatable motion of lenses across a wide range of adjustable paths. These were used to produce cyanotype animations using laser light, introducing a controlled image-making system not typically associated with the process.
